Climate Change And Human Life.
Making good use of dwindling natural resources is one of the keys to avoiding the catastrophe that comes from massive pollution, yet many countries are still not managing this well. According to data from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, in 2012, countries around the world emitted between 110 billion and 280 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide.
The natural resources of the world are so abundant that our excessive use of them is directly linked to the high level of climate change we are experiencing today. As the Earth heats up and natural resources become scarce, we could see dramatic consequences, such as more destructive storms and floods, or even mass extinction.
One of the biggest sources of climate pollution is our pollution of the atmosphere through our use of fossil fuels. Currently, around 95% of global emissions of carbon dioxide come from the transport sector – cars and planes.
The global polluters of climate pollution were calculated by the Carbon Monitoring Program (CMP) at the University of Edinburgh, and included key players such as the EU, China, the US and India.
The data was compiled by analyzing the greenhouse gases emitted from the electricity generation, transport, heating and industrial processes, as well as the greenhouse gas emissions from the production and import of products used by consumers.
Pollution of the planet through air pollution
Air pollution is also a huge environmental threat. Climate pollution from air pollution adds to greenhouse gases and the resulting climatic change is one of the main drivers of climate change. According to a 2014 report from the
World Health Organisation (WHO), air pollution causes one of the biggest health threats today – nearly three times as many deaths as being a victim of malaria or HIV/AIDS. With more than seven million people dying from air pollution each year, it is also the leading environmental cause of death worldwide.
Nearly four million deaths are caused by poor air quality – about 1.6 million of which are linked to outdoor pollution. Many other deaths are caused by indoor pollution. In 2012, the WHO estimated that environmental pollution is responsible for 7.5 million deaths per year.
Both air pollution and climate change are caused by the pollution of the atmosphere, and the main cause of air pollution is the release of carbon dioxide by fossil fuel combustion. The other causes of air pollution are directly related to the production of air pollutants by humans, such as nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, ozone, carbon monoxide and a range of other chemicals, while climate change is the result of excessive carbon dioxide emissions.
One of the best ways to protect your health is to not move to high emission areas. Another is to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, for example by reducing your consumption of carbon-intensive fuels. Some organisations, such as the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), calculate how the current emissions of major companies and industries compare to what is known about their climate change impacts.
As part of the CDP’s 2017 carbon disclosures, the UK’s major oil and gas producers, British Petroleum, Royal Dutch Shell and Total, have revealed that they are more polluting than initially estimated.
Modern life is made possible by the nature of our environment and our modern technologies. Fortunately, modern life is being made better and more sustainable all the time.
